Twenty-five hundred years ago, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote: “The only constant is change.” It often feels that way. We are overwhelmed with work, family, and our chaotic, rapidly changing world. Just keeping pace with our daily lives can make us dizzy.
In response, every year at the High Holy Days we are asked to ground ourselves in the things that don’t change. We return to our source, called Makor in Hebrew, to rediscover our stable center. This year our VBS community will explore how Makor intersects with our four themes: learning (Torah), inspiration, connection and kindness (hesed). The artists and artworks gathered in this exhibit highlight these themes, and explore what it means to connect to our source.
Makor is where we touch eternity through our tradition. Makor is where we find inspiration in prayer and meditation. Makor is where we connect deeply to others. Makor is where we regain our perspective and find joy in acts of loving-kindness. One of God’s names is Makor Hayim, “Source of Life,” teaching that these enduring things are truly godly.
This year, we invite you to find space in your busy life to tap into your Makor. May you find in it the inspiration, joy, and goodness to live a godly life.
